The Economic Times daily newspaper is available online now. Read Today's Paper Jio IPO beyond telecom: Why the Ambanis are pitching AI, cloud and 7,220 patents as Jio’s tech futureBy Nikhil Agarwal, ETMarkets.comLast Updated: Oct 21, 2026, 09:24:00 AM ISTSynopsis

Jio Platforms ₹30,213 crore IPO marks a significant shift toward technology-driven digital services. With a focus on leveraging its connectivity through AI and cloud technologies, the company is also highlighting its extensive patent holdings. While Reliance Jio Infocomm continues to generate substantial revenue, the company aspires to broaden its reach into enterprise solutions and diverse digital products.

Jio Platforms is seeking a technology premium for a business whose current financial engine remains overwhelmingly telecom. The Reliance Industries unit is presenting its proprietary 4G and 5G stack, cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence capabilities and 7,220 patent applications as the foundation for a broader digital services platform as its ₹30,213 crore initial public offering (IPO) opened for subscription today.

The company’s red herring prospectus (RHP) describes Jio as a technology platform built on proprietary digital technology and pan-India connectivity. Brokerages similarly classify it as a technology-led digital platform spanning connectivity, enterprise solutions, cloud, entertainment and AI.

But the financial data shows that the transformation is still at an early stage. Reliance Jio Infocomm contributed 87.74% of Jio Platforms’ consolidated revenue in FY26, according to the RHP. It also accounted for 94.88% of EBITDA and 93.76% of profit after tax.

Jio Platforms reported FY26 revenue of ₹1,46,885 crore, EBITDA of ₹76,255 crore and profit after tax of ₹30,049 crore. The company’s standalone digital services revenue was about ₹16,167 crore, or roughly 11% of consolidated revenue, according to Shriram Research.

The RHP says Jio operates as a single operating segment and that digital connectivity constitutes substantially all of its revenue. Individual product revenues are not separately disclosed because several digital services are bundled with or subsumed within connectivity offerings.

That makes the IPO’s technology narrative primarily a forward looking proposition: Jio wants to use its telecom network, customer base and proprietary technology to build higher-value digital, enterprise and AI businesses.

        Jio’s technology platform pitch

Brokerage Kotak Neo says that in a software-driven network architecture, the traditional distinction between telecom and technology no longer applies. JM Financial describes Jio as a technology platform that uses connectivity as its foundational distribution layer and says the company is transitioning into an AI-native digital services business.

Systematix calls Jio a technology-led digital platform, while Motilal Oswal describes it as a technology platform offering digital connectivity, 5G, cloud services, enterprise solutions and artificial intelligence.

Jio’s RHP outlines five broad layers of its platform: digital products and services, digital connectivity, physical and digital distribution, customer insights and proprietary technology.

The company’s consumer offerings include JioTV+, JioSaavn, JioGames, JioHotstar, JioAICloud, JioPC, cloud gaming, smart-home services and AI products.

Its enterprise portfolio includes JioBusiness, leased-line connectivity, MPLS, VPN, enterprise IoT, CPaaS, managed Wi-Fi, private 5G, software-defined wide-area networks, cloud and security solutions, managed network operations and enterprise AI.

        Connectivity remains the cash engine

Jio’s ability to scale these offerings rests on its telecom base. Its subsidiary RJIL served 533.3 million customers in India as of June 2026. The company carried around 60% of India’s wireless data traffic in fiscal 2026. It also had more than 1,000 digital television channels and 15 OTT services offered through JioFiber and JioAirFiber packages as of June.

Fixed broadband is another area of expansion. Jio accounted for 67.56% of India’s net fixed-broadband additions in FY26, according to the information provided by the company.

The RHP says the company’s wireless broadband network covers more than 99% of India’s population, while its fixed-broadband network reaches approximately 98% of the country’s pin codes.

The brokerage reports see rising data consumption, tariff-led ARPU expansion, 5G adoption, JioFiber and JioAirFiber penetration, enterprise services and digital offerings as the main growth drivers.

However, the current earnings contribution of these non-telecom businesses remains limited compared with RJIL’s contribution.

        AI, cloud and enterprise opportunity

Jio is positioning AI and cloud as the next layer of monetisation over its connectivity platform. The RHP identifies cloud computing, enterprise managed services, cloud gaming, IoT, cloud PC and entertainment content as digital-services businesses. It also identifies JioBrain as an AI platform for network operations, predictive analytics, automation and enterprise applications.

The company has filed 7,220 patent applications covering 4G, 5G, 6G, cloud-native core-network architecture, AI-driven network automation and other digital technologies.

Around 45% of Jio’s full-time workforce, or 12,477 employees, works in digital products and technology development.

The company says its proprietary stack includes an in-house network core, cloud-native radio access network, OSS/BSS platforms, device engineering, software systems and AI-driven network automation.

Jio is also exploring international monetisation of this technology. The RHP refers to potential overseas partnerships, managed-service arrangements and strategic deployments involving its cloud native RAN, 5G core, OSS/BSS platforms, fixed wireless access solutions, AI-driven automation and digital services platforms.

        The Ambani pitch

The technology narrative was reinforced by Managing Director Akash Ambani in an interview with PTI this week where he was quoted as saying that “connectivity was the first product we built on that platform. Digital services, AI and cloud are what we are layering on top of it now”.

Ambani said around 26 crore Indians still use 2G services, while fixed broadband reaches only about 21% of households. Digital-services adoption among India’s more than 7.9 crore micro, small and medium enterprises remains below 3%, he added.

“We build for more customers, deeper engagement and more services per customer,” Ambani said. “Tariffs are one part of a much bigger story.”

Jio is also exploring satellite connectivity and 6G. Ambani said the company was evaluating an indigenous satellite constellation and ground-station network alongside partnerships with global satellite providers.

The company’s AI strategy also includes partnerships with Google and Meta. Jio users are being offered Google’s AI Pro plan at no extra cost for 18 months, while Reliance Enterprise Intelligence, a joint venture involving Reliance Intelligence and Meta, plans to distribute enterprise AI products in India.

What investors are being asked to price

The IPO will value Jio Platforms at around ₹10.3 lakh crore at the upper end of the price band. Up to ₹27,500 crore of the proceeds will be used to repay or prepay borrowings at RJIL.

The issue therefore combines a mature telecom cash flow story with an emerging technology platform opportunity.

The current economics are clear: telecom connectivity generates most of Jio’s revenue, EBITDA and profit. The technology case rests on the prospect that Jio can use its network, customer data, patents and engineering capabilities to increase digital-services revenue, expand enterprise adoption and monetise its proprietary infrastructure beyond India.

That transition is also acknowledged in the RHP, which says Jio’s key performance indicators currently focus primarily on digital connectivity and may evolve as the company moves towards a digital-services and platform-led monetisation model.

For investors, the central question is not whether Jio is already a technology company. It is whether the company can convert its telecom scale into a larger, faster growing and more profitable technology platform.
